‘It’s a special thing because it’s every four years’ – Mbappe and Lewandwoski both AGAINST biennial World Cup plans

SUPERSTARS Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski have spoken out against plans for a biennial World Cup.

FIFA have been pushing for a World Cup to be held every two years instead of four, but the proposal has been met with widespread disapproval.

The idea of biennial World Cup is to meet the demands of the younger generation of football fans.

However, Mbappe and Lewandowski are not fans.

Paris Saint-Germain's Mbappe says the World Cup being held every four years is what makes the competition 'special'.

Speaking at the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards, Mbappe said: "To play the World Cup every two years, it would make this competition normal, and that should not be the case.

"Over a season, we would have to play 60 games a year. The Euro the World Cup, the Nations League… We like to play but it is too much.

"If people want to see quality, I think we need to take a break."

Bayern Munich ace Lewandowski agrees with Mbappe, saying if players are forced to play more games, the overall quality on show will drop.

The Poland international, who picked up two awards in Dubai, added: "We have a lot of games in the year, very busy weeks.

"If you want to give the fans something different, you need a break.

"We have to look ahead, if we want to play a World Cup every two years, the level will drop.

"It's impossible for the body and mind to perform at the same level."

Mbappe was named the Best Men's Player of the Year, pipping Lewandowski to the award.

Lewandowski was, however, recognised as he was awarded the Maradona Award for Best Goal Scorer of the Year and the TikTok Fans Player of the Year.
