'AN EXCLUSIVE PARTY'

World Super League is ‘unstoppable’ according to European bigwig and could be formed when Premier League TV deal ends

Dutchman Jacco Swart is fearful that any such breakaway will be devastating for the smaller clubs

A WORLD Super League is now 'unstoppable' and could be a reality at the end of the current Premier League TV deal.

That's the view of Jacco Swart, director of the European Professional Football League, who believes it is just a 'few short years' before we see a breakaway by the countries biggest teams.

According to the , Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid are the clubs most behind the plans with teams from China, the US, Brazil, Australia and South Africa also interested.

Swart said: "We will see a worldwide football competition in a few years. That is a development which nobody can stop anymore.

“It will be an exclusive party for the happy few — for the biggest football brands in the world.

“This new Super League will be driven by TV markets, huge sponsors, branding and marketing all over the world. And not by real football factors."

The Premier League would still be awash with cash - but lower league clubs could suffer

And Dutchman Swart is fearful that any such breakaway will be devastating for the smaller clubs.

He continued: "The traditional football formats will be snowed under.

“What it will mean exactly for the biggest football leagues in the world, the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga, I don’t know yet.

"For these leagues there are billions at stake, for us millions.”

Should the format be adopted, it would give Premier League clubs a major dilemma - especially if the Champions League remains as it is.

Teams would have to choose whether to participate in the lucrative World league or stay in European competition.
