But the chances of the Italian international signing were slimmed when Paul Pogba made his record £89million move to Old Trafford.

Bonucci was on United's radar after being one of the standout defenders during Euro 2016.

And the centre back was also key in Juve's four successive Serie A titles.

United have had some bad luck with luring defenders to the Theatre of Dreams after Jose Fonte turned down a move.

The Southampton defender signed a new deal with the south-coast club to end speculation that he would join Mourinho.

United - who take on rivals Manchester City today - could struggle at the back if injuries come their way after reports Mourinho's relationship with Matteo Darmian had broken down.

Antonio Valencia has established himself as a reliable right-back with Darmian yet to start a game under Mourinho.

Timothy Fosu-Mensa is in reserve and Darmian could leave United in the January transfer window with a number of Italian clubs ready to come in for the 26-year-old.
