Rudiger, who has won a host of trophies with Chelsea, is yet to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge and looks set to become a free agent in the summer.

He has made 188 appearances for the club since joining for £29million from Roma in 2017.

But it looks as though Chelsea won't receive any transfer fee for him.

Eddie Howe's Saudi-backed Magpies are keen to bring the German to the club in what would be a major coup.

But are now reporting that Man Utd have also identified him as a potential recruit for their defence.

The Red Devils' centre-backs have struggled to build any kind of momentum so far this season.

Raphael Varane has disappointed since arriving from Real Madrid in the summer.

Club captain Harry Maguire has been out of form for some time and been criticised for his recent performances.

Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly remain in and out of Ralf Rangnick's starting line-ups.

With that in mind, Rudiger could be a viable option for United come the end of the campaign.

However, according to , the managerial uncertainty at Old Trafford is hampering their pursuit of the ex-Stuttgart man.

With interim boss Rangnick set to move upstairs as a consultant in the summer, there is no clear indication as to who the head coach of Man Utd will be come the start of the 2022/23 season.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag have both been linked with the role.

Current Tottenham coach Antonio Conte has also been touted as a potential candidate.
