But when it went out of play the pair then squared up to one another and butted heads as tempers began to flare.

Saint-Maximin's team-mate Joelinton then came over and pushed Bentancur as a melay ensued.

Spurs defender Emerson Royal was also in the thick of it, with referee Martin Atkinson left to sort out the punishments.

He decided to book Saint-Maximin, Bentancur and Joelinton but all three escaped a red card.

As the players then made their way down the tunnel at half-time, Spurs' technical director Fabio Paratici was seen berating the fourth official.

The incident came just a few minutes after both sides found the back of the net in a frantic period of the match.

Fabian Schar gave Eddie Howe's men a surprise lead, catching Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris out with a clever free-kick.

But just four minutes later Antonio Conte's men were level.

Son Heung-min's wicked delivery was headed on by Welsh defender Ben Davies as the Lilywhites equalised in front of a rocking home crowd.

And Tottenham were 2-1 up three minutes into the second half when Harry Kane's wonderful delivery was finished off by Matt Doherty.

Kane produced a talismanic performance in a scintillating second period for the hosts.

Goals from Son, Emerson Royal and Steven Bergwijn sealed an emphatic victory as Conte's men move into the top four ahead of Arsenal's trip to Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, Newcastle remain well clear of Premier League relegation despite the loss as they sit 10 points clear of 18th place Watford.
