MANCHESTER UNITED fans are beginning to rally around under-fire manager Jose Mourinho.

The controversial Portuguese's stuttering start to the season has come as a shock to those who supposed United would soar away at the top of the Premier League table.

Instead, they have just nine points from five games - and a loss to Feyenoord in the Europa League to boot.

But there is a some sympathy for Mourhino and his belief that some players who worked under his predecessor Louis Van Gaal are struggling to rid themselves of the Dutchman's philosophy rather than play off the cuff as he would like them to.

Van Gaal told them their first thought should be about a pass inside. He was all about getting in the players' minds - but Mourinho encourages free-thinking and the emphasis on his training sessions are on ball work, not mind games.
