JOSE MOURINHO has hit out at the "football Einsteins" trying to savage his career and Manchester United's history after his woeful week at United came to an end with a 3-1 EFL Cup win at League One Northampton Town.

Mourinho told MUTV after United ended their run of three successive defeats: "We have three home matches now in a row and it is always good to be at home. I can understand clearly the disappointment. If the fans have been disappointed with the last week, I understand completely but I am sure they will be behind the team like they always are.

"We had a bad week. I know that the world is full of Einsteins, I know that they tried to delete 16 years of my career, they tried to delete an unbelievable history of Manchester United Football Club and to focus on a bad week with three bad results. But that's the new football, it's full of Einsteins."

United won the game at Sixfields thanks to goals from Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford. Alex Revell had equalised for The Cobblers.

Mourinho was quick to praise the teenager Rashford, 18, who came on as a substitute to score. Rashford scored United's third after goalkeeper Adam Smith missed a long clearance to allow Rashford to roll the ball into an empty net.

Mourinho said: "In that situation it is not about the speed it is more about the attitude. I don't think in that situation you need to be very fast, you need to be mentally aggressive, you need to put pressure on the defender or the goalkeeper. This is what he has – and some other people do not. His understanding of the game and the way he moves when he plays was key."
