GARY NEVILLE insists Jose Mourinho’s decision to drop Wayne Rooney is the manager trying to work out his best team.

The former Manchester United right-back insisted — in his own traditionally original manner — that the players available to the Special One are a mixture of signings from previous managers.

Mourinho must choose from players signed by himself, Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal — and Neville believes he is now trying to figure out how to get the players to play together.

Speaking on Sky Sports before today’s clash with Leicester, he said: “The last ten transfer windows have been overseen by four different managers — so what you’ve got is four different managers’ players.

“You’ve got a plate with Bolognese, a chicken tikka masala, a roast dinner and loads of curry and gravy thrown over the top.

“Individually they’re quite nice but together, Jose Mourinho’s got to find which bits of that plate he doesn’t like.”

Meanwhile, Neville also had his say on the impact of Rooney’s omission.

The United captain has struggled for form for the best part of a year now, with many fans calling for him to be axed.

And the ex-Valencia manager admitted the time was right for Mourinho to leave out England’s record goal scorer.

He added: “I think it was inevitable. I think the pressure has been building for the last two to three weeks. Even from last season.
“I think in some way it has been a distraction. I think the fact that he's left out is probably the right decision.”
