Matondo, who was on loan at Cercle Brugge last season but is contracted to Schalke, has also attracted interest from Ligue 1 clubs Lens, Brest and Troyes in France.

The 21-year-old did not find an agreement with Belgian club Brugge, where he scored nine goals last term, but is available for £3.5million.

Matondo has just one year left on his deal with the Bundesliga outfit.

The ex-Manchester City starlet was in the Wales squad for their five June fixtures when Robert Page’s side qualified for the World Cup.

According to reports in Germany, Schalke are hoping for a quick deal because they are back in pre-season next Monday.

Leeds' priority is keeping Etihad target Kalvin Phlilips.

The £50m-rated England midfielder, 26, has reportedly told Elland Road chiefs he wants to join the Prem champions.

And it's claimed City want a deal sorted before they head to America for a pre-season tour in July.

Brentford too face an uphill fight to retain their own star man.

Manchester United appear favourites ahead of old club Tottenham for Bees' playmaker Christian Eriksen.

The Denmark and ex-Inter Milan star told Viaplay: "I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision.

“I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is, but it isn’t essential for me.”

Meanwhile, Forest have opened talks with United over loaning England keeper Dean Henderson, who has also been linked with Newcastle.
