MANCHESTER CITY defender John Stones has revealed his "shock" after hearing Sam Allardyce had left his role as England boss.

Stones played in Allardyce's only game as Three Lions manager - a 1-0 win in a World Cup Qualifier clash over Slovakia.

Allardyce, who sent his squad a postcard before resigning as gaffer, had built a positive rapport amongst the England squad and Stones admitted that he wanted to work for the Ex-Sunderland boss further and was sad to see him go.

, Stones said: "It was a shock about Sam.

"I enjoyed working under Sam. I was looking forward to working with him more.

"When I played [against Slovakia], I thoroughly enjoyed the week and a bit we spent together.

"Sam was excited to work with the boys. It was a relief as well when we got the win, we were happy for everyone, him included. And after the game there was a good celebration.

"I'm sad to see him go and wish him all the best."

The 22-year-old had his fair share of critics during his time at Everton and was often blasted for his unnecessary risk taking deep in his own half.

However since his £50million switch to Man City this summer, Stones has been in sensational form and puts his performances down to Pep Guardiola.

He added: "Pep's improved me in everything.

"In myself as well, I feel I'm back enjoying my football. That's a big thing for any player, playing with nothing on my back. I'm confident, enjoying it, and the winning helps that.

"The gaffer works on my positioning. I'll be in the wrong position sometimes and he'll stop the session and come over and coach where I should be, what I should do in each situation.

"He does it in a calm but assertive way. It's good when he gives me these little pointers.

"He's very passionate and that's rubbing off on us, the passion, the fighting for each other, the winning.

"As a kid I always wanted to win things and now I've the opportunity to do that."
