An FA insider said: “After Sam’s meeting was made public there was Government contact and that put massive pressure on them to take action.

“They wanted to know about the reports of corruption and how it was being tackled.”

Allardyce, 61, met Glenn and FA chairman Greg Clarke on Tuesday where the ex-Sunderland boss apologised for what he was caught on tape saying.
