Inside Man Utd’s new hardcore training regime as Erik ten Hag and Steve McClaren ‘change standards’ at Carrington

MANCHESTER UNITED are just three days into pre-season training but Erik ten Hag is already making an impact on the training ground.

The Red Devils have published footage from every day of training so far and fans are encouraged by what they have seen.

Ten Hag has taken a leading role and appears to be very hands-on, directly issuing players instructions in how he wants them to play.

In one clip he pauses training to take over and direct where he wants the ball to be passed - also using terms such as "lay-off" and "third-man run" to get across his ideas.

Other videos show his coaches getting involved in the nitty-gritty too - including Steve McClaren who has returned to United as assistant manager.

The former England boss is heard telling his players to focus on the "detail" as he and fellow new coach Mitchell van der Gaag attempt to implement Ten Hag's standards.

Van der Gaag is heard instructing players to offer the third-man run - one small change that will be part of United's overall attacking philosophy.

McClaren spoke publicly in his McClaren Performance Podcast about how the coaching staff is trying to bring about success by changing the day-to-day habits and behaviour of the squad.

He said: "So much noise around new players and new appointments.

"To me changes like this are bigger than any signing. The day-to-day process makes change, not throwing new people at it. That goes for any club."

United are yet to show whether they have changed on the pitch but some fans are encouraged by the approach taken by Ten Hag and his staff.

One supporter wrote on Twitter: "A manager that is very meticulous in his planning his attention to detail is very precise.

"He's a very hands-on manager that wants to be involved in everything. It's so beautiful to see. These players can only benefit from him."

Another added: "A United manager actually talking tactics, I'm surprised, I love Erik already."

And a third said: "Already better than Pep & Klopp combined."
