GARETH SOUTHGATE is laughing all the way to the bank as he is set for a bumper pay rise for bossing England.

Southgate - who was laughing and joking with players and staff during his first training session with the Three Lions squad at St George's Park - will earn £500,000 for managing four games after taking over from shamed Sam Allardyce.

According to, the FA are willing to reward Southgate for taking over at such short notice by giving him Allardyce's £3million-a-year salary on a pro rata basis.

That means Southgate will double his earnings for his current job with the England Under-21s.

Allardyce was axed after being embroiled in a scandal where he advised fake businessmen on how to "get round" rules on players.

Southgate then stepped in as a caretaker boss and will be in charge at least until the friendly with Spain on November 15.

And he has been given a boost in keeping the job as the FA will only conduct a search for a new boss after the Spain game.

He has been given assurances that the priority at the moment is giving him and the squad all the support they need to top World Cup qualifying group F.

Southgate took charge of his first training session ahead of the game against Malta on Saturday.

The big story surrounds uncapped defender Michael Keane, who was called up at the expense of Glen Johnson who misses out; the Stoke man himself was named only in the absence of Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne.
