RANGERS are closing in on a deal for Ben Davies - as Calvin Bassey arrived in Amsterdam.

As SunSport revealed today, Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has moved quickly to replace Ajax-bound Bassey with the Ibrox club agreeing a £4m fee for Davies.

The Liverpool defender came close to joining Celtic, before opting instead for Anfield.

But the 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United and is surplus to requirements under Jurgen Klopp.

Davies is now set to undergo a medical ahead of his move to Ibrox.
He will become Rangers' sixth signing of the summer - a direct replacement for Bassey.

The 22-year-old is expected to sign a four-year deal with the Dutch giants in a deal worth around £23million.

It represents a stunning piece of business for last season’s Europa League Final who snapped up the Nigerian international for a paltry £230,000.

Meanwhile, SunSport understands Kemar Roofe will NOT be joining Derby.

Gers have no plans to send the striker out on loan with Ibrox sources insisting last night he’s firmly part of van Bronckhorst’s plans.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has opened up on his ‘admiration’ for his former Old Firm rival Ange Postecoglou.

The Legendary midfielder left Ibrox last season after a successful three-and-a-half years in the hotseat.

He only partly faced off with Postecoglou on one occasion before his departure last November.

A string of covid isolations in the Light Blues camp meant he sat at home as his side ran out 1-0 victors early in the campaign.

But as Aston Villa continue pre-season with a trip to Australia – the Liverpool icon was quizzed on what he made of Aussie hero Postecoglou's debut campaign as Celtic boss.

Gerrard was full of praise and couldn't speak highly enough of his former rival.

He told News Corp Australia:  “Ange did fantastically well. He came in with his own style.

“It took a little bit of time for him to implement that but once the players got used to that, they went on to win the league title and the League Cup as well, so it was a very successful season for him."
