Jose Mourinho has rarely used the 26-year-old since arriving at United in the summer, instead preferring Antonio Valencia.

And according to Tuttosport and La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Portuguese coach is prepared to cash in on the defender.

Darmian, capped 26 times by the Azzurri, has been frustrated by his lack of game time and fears losing his place at international level too.

It is claimed that a deal has almost been agreed with only the finer details left to iron out.

A paid loan deal is believed is in place with Inter then having the option to buy him permanently at the end of the season.

Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan have also been linked with a move for the former Torino ace, but Frank de Boer appears to have won the race for his signature.
