Worrying statistic reveals Premier League clubs are worst in Europe at promoting home-grown players

Bournemouth are the most successful at bringing in homegrown players whilst Watford are bottom of the pile

PREMIER LEAGUE sides are behind their European rivals when it comes to promoting home-grown players.

Stats show 16 out of the 20 clubs in the top flight have failed to give English players at least half of the game time available to them this season.

Table shows the percentage of minutes played

Research group, CIES Football Observatory, released the findings which shows worrying figures for English players trying to break into the first team.

Only Bournemouth, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Everton have handed more than 50 per cent of their minutes to homegrown players.

The worst offenders are Watford, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Walter Mazzarri's Hornets have given only one English player a start this season in striker Troy Deeney whilst Chelsea are averaging just 16 minutes for their young players.

Compared to Europe's top leagues, Premier League are lagging behind.

1. Borussia Dortmund - 43
2. Real Madrid - 41
. Barcelona - 41
4. Atletico Madrid - 36

5. PSG - 35
6. Bayern Munich - 34
7. Juventus - 32
8. Napoli - 20

11 La Liga sides have given over half of the game time available to Spanish players compared to England's four with 17 Ligue 1 teams also giving French players more than 50% of game time.

Spanish side Osasuna are giving Spanish players 97% of available minutes - the highest in Europe.

Out of the European giants, Borussia Dortmund are the most successful at playing homegrown players averaging 43 domestic minutes.

Chelsea are the worst averaging just 16.
