But he nearly missed his debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship three years ago after struggling to reach the ground following the costly incident.

Although he failed to see the funny side at the time, Wisdom can now laugh about getting stuck in the pothole.

The 23-year-old, who is now on loan at Red Bull Salzburg, recalled to The Set Pieces: "Just go for it - I can get through this. I can't turn back.

"I was going through it fine and then – bam! – oh my gosh.

"I laugh about it now but at the time I was fuming."

The towering stopper is thoroughly enjoying his latest spell out on loan from Anfield and says his new Austrian side have been very accommodating.

They have provided a translator, helped him find an apartment and set up a mobile phone.

He said: "All the little things that you don't think about.

"People think 'Oh, the Austrian league', the quality is not going to be there or I'm not going to improve.

“But I've come here, I've seen the quality and I know what the league is about. It's a good opportunity to learn a different culture and a different style of play."
