Watford's win boosted them away from the relegation zone and into ninth place, while Boro slipped to 17th.

Despite the post-game argument, Hornets captain Troy Deeney was in good spirits, saying: "We battled. We fought for every ball, first and second ball, and made it more difficult.

"We've just got to keep going, fight for a level of consistency.

"We've got to make sure we keep a level performance that's high enough to be in the Premier League."
