Since joining the club in 2012, Modric has gone onto win two Champions Leagues and the Copa del Rey but is still waiting for the allusive La Liga title.

A club statement read: "Real Madrid and Luka Modric have reached an agreement to extend the player's contract with the club until 30 June 2020."

Real Madrid will now turn their attentions to keeping both Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo at the club.

Bale, whose contract expires in the summer of 2019, is reportedly demanding an incredible £750,000-a-week to remain at the club.

Meanwhile striker Javier Hernandez could make a sensational return to Real Madrid.

The Mexico striker has netted seven goals so far this season for Bayer Leverkusen, following a haul of 26 in his first campaign in the Bundesliga.
