The Belgian ace has less than two years to run on his current deal and Spurs are desperate for him to stay at White Hart Lane.

Vertonghen has been a key player for Tottenham ever since his move from Ajax in 2012 and has formed a rock-solid partnership with compatriot Toby Alderweireld.

The defender recently urged Spurs to hand teammate Hugo Lloris an improved contract but now looks set to be rewarded himself.

Vertonghen will become the seventh Tottenham star to get his hands on a fresh deal in recent times, with Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier and Harry Winks already putting pen to paper this season.

Erik Lamela is also in line to commit his future as Mauricio Pochettino looks to keep spirits high.

They’re just one point off top after conceding only four goals in eight games, with Vertonghen’s presence a key factor.

Tottenham travel to Bournemouth tomorrow, with the Cherries riding high on the back of a 6-1 win against Hull, and Vertonghen will have to be at his best to make sure Lloris helps himself to another clean sheet.
