Everton plot move for Ruben Semedo after sending scouts to watch the Sporting Lisbon defender

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman is looking for a long term replacement for John Stones following his big money Man City switch

EVERTON are plotting a a potential January move for Sporting Lisbon star Ruben Semedo.

The Toffees have been monitoring the defender this season but have recently stepped up their efforts by sending to scouts to watch him in action.

But with Everton's financial power, boss Ronald Koeman will remain confident that he can lure the centre back, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, to Goodison Park.

The Dutch boss is aiming to fill the void left by John Stones after his £47.5million switch to Manchester City this summer.

Koeman signed Ashley Williams for £10m but at the age of 32, the manager is looking to build for the future.

And the highly-rated talent will be his first port of call after Semedo impressed in the Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Semedo learnt his trade with the Sporting Lisbon academy - the same one that produced the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo.

But he won't come cheaply. He signed a new contract in March tying him to the club until 2022 with a release clause being set at £40million.
