Rangers urged to sign Manchester United’s Tom Heaton and land keeper with ‘unfinished business’

RANGERS have been backed to sign Manchester United's Tom Heaton as a solution to their goalkeeping dilemma.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst recently went back on his call to make Jon McLaughlin number one amid strong criticism from the Ibrox faithful.

Rangers fans had been calling for veteran stopper Allan McGregor to return after the 4-0 hammering at Celtic Park at the start of last month.

McLaughlin has since lost his starting spot, with McGregor taking plaudits for his display in the home Champions League tie with Napoli on his return.

The 40-year-old heroically saved from the spot twice that night and has been the manager's choice between the sticks ever since.

However with Van Bronckhorst having already tried to limit his playing time this season, Ibrox chiefs may have to look to the position again in the near future.

Former England stopper Paul Robinson reckons his ex-team mate Heaton is an option the club should be seriously considering.

36-year-old Heaton last started a competitive first team match on New Year's Day 2020 when he was number one at Aston Villa.

He made a 22 minute cameo for United in August last year, replacing Dean Henderson late on in a Champions League tie at home to BSC Young Boys.

But despite his lack of recent first team football Robinson reckons the three time England cap is far too good to be playing third choice at Old Trafford.

He's tipped Rangers to make a move and thinks Heaton would be a 'fantastic acquisition for any club'.

He told : "If they can get him out of Man United, Tom would be an excellent option.

"Tom is somebody who has a lot of unfinished business. He got injured at Aston Villa and never won his place back because (Emiliano) Martinez came in.

“He has not been given a fair chance at Man United.

"I suspect promises have been made by previous managers and nothing has come to fruition.

“Tom is far better than being number three goalkeeper, no matter what club he is at. He is not at that stage of his career yet. He has so much to give.

“A move to a club like Rangers would be a very good move for him. It would be great for Rangers as well because he is a top-class goalkeeper.

"Tom is hungry. He would be a fantastic acquisition for any club.”
