But should he have been wary?
Here are their four previous hammerings in October.
Newcastle (a) 0-5: Oct 20, 1996
THIS was a meeting of the previous season’s top two — but it was all one-way traffic at St James’ Park.
The Red Devils had beaten Newcastle 4-0 the Charity Shield just two months earlier, but were behind on 12 minutes when Darren Peacock bundled over the line.
David Ginola added a superb second on the half hour mark — and passionately celebrated.
The expected response from Alex Ferguson’s men after half-time didn’t arrive and Les Ferdinand headed in Alan Shearer’s cross on 63 minutes.
Before the Toon legend got in on the act nine minutes later.
Newcastle had beaten Man United the world-record £15million signing of Shearer in the summer.
And, with seven minutes remaining, Philippe Albert scored one of the Premier League’s most iconic goals when he lobbed Peter Schmeichel.
Southampton (a) 3-6: Oct 26, 1996
JUST six days later, United were humbled again.
Schmeichel conceded 11 goals in less than a week — and was chipped twice.
Eyal Berkovic opened the scoring on six minutes, before Matt Le Tissier delightfully lobbed the big Dane to make it two.
David Beckham scored a free-kick to reduce arrears, but Egil Ostenstad made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time.
David May pulled one back 11 minutes after the break.
And, with United in search of a winner, the Saints ran riot with three goals in the final seven minutes.
Berkovic and Ostenstad both scored their second, before Paul Scholes’ stoppage time consolation.
And there was still time for Gary Neville to put through his own net and prevent Ostenstad from scoring the first Premier League hat-trick against the Red Devils.
