But the 21-year-old has handed boss Antonio Conte a huge boost with the news that he is ready for action again as he looks to build up his fitness for the first team.

Zouma will start against Derby's development squad on Monday but is unlikely to last the full 90 minutes as he continues his recovery.

Last week Conte confirmed Zouma was lightly training with the youth squad and had hopes he would join the senior squad before making his first appearance under the Italian manager.

Chelsea make the short trip to West Ham in the EFL Cup Wednesday and supporters are also set to welcome back captain John Terry.

Conte is expected to start the veteran centre back in his favoured 3-4-3 formation after his return from injury.

Terry hasn't featured since Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Swansea on September 11 but his timely return has handed the manager further options across the back.
