HERE is something you are unlikely to see on the Old Trafford touchline tonight: Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho hugging and dancing in jubilation.

After all, one of them has to win and the other has to lose in tonight's EFL Cup clash, even if it goes to penalties.

But video footage from the 1997 Cup Winners' Cup final shows the pair embracing and dancing on the pitch after winning the trophy with Barcelona.

The low-scoring affair took place in the Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam - and the winning goal was scored by emerging superstar striker Ronaldo from the penalty spot.

Brazilian ace Ronaldo would go on to become a world record transfer later that summer when he moved to Inter Milan for £19.5million.

But his team-mate Guardiola and 'translator' Mourinho had a profitable working relationship at Barca - before renewing an ugly rivalry when managers.

The side that night also featured current Barca boss Luis Enrique.

Guardiola took charge of Barcelona in 2008 after Frank Rijkaard was let go, he then went on to win every major title in the game with his star-studded team, including two Champions Leagues in 2009 and 2011.

And for Mourinho, he had to get into management the difficult way before taking charge of Real Madrid in 2010.

The 'Special One' was in charge at Benfica for a short spell, before working his way back into the Portuguese top flight via Uniao de Leiria then Porto, where he won the Champions League.

Mourinho then had successful years at Chelsea, before winning the treble at Inter Milan and then landing the Real Madrid job.

That is where the pair clashed most violently - there were many ill-tempered clashes between Real and Barcelona.

Mourinho was given the all-clear to try and disrupt the exceedingly talented Barca squad, playing in an incredible free-flowing scoring style of Guardiola.

The Portuguese even disgracefully gouged then Barca assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye during a touchline fracas and a match that saw three red cards.

The pair would clash in press conferences, before Guardiola called an end to tensions at the Bernabeu's press conference suite, saying: "In this room, he is the chief, the f***ing man.

"In here he is the f***ing man and I can't compete with him."

Since they have been back in England, there have been signs of the frosty relationship thawing, despite both bosses managing on differing sides of the Manchester divide.

Despite United and City sharing a close rivalry, their clashes could never be described as poisonous - Roy Keane stamping on Alf Inge Haaland aside - and the way City played at their free-flowing best at Old Trafford last month suggests Mourinho is trying to play a different style.
