West Ham 2 Chelsea 1: Goals Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes knock London rivals out of EFL Cup
Slaven Bilic's side won the London derby with Antonio Conte's side crashing out
CHELSEA were booted out of the EFL Cup by a brilliant West Ham side who finally made the London stadium look like home.
A first-half header from Cheikhou Kouyate and a second-half strike from young summer signing Edimilson Fernandes KO’ed Antonio Conte’s side who were brought down to earth after their demolition of Manchester United on Sunday.
John Terry’s triumphant return got off on the wrong foot to allow the Hammers to stun the visitors. Mark Noble fired in a wicked cross and, before the Blues captain could head it away, Kouyate outmuscled him and thumped a header past Asmir Begovic.
And the home side wanted a penalty moments later when Dimitri Payet was teed up for a shot only for N’Golo Kante to slide in and upend him. But Craig Pawson believed it to be legal.
But the Hammers got the second goal they craved just after the break when Fernandes fired home his first goal for the club from outside the box.
Slaven Bilic’s side went close with a counter-attack that ended with a fine Begovic save. But Conte’s side was so lazy in the second phase of play that they let Fernandes cut in onto his left foot and fire home with no pressure.
Gary Cahil managed to poke home a late consolation goal as crowd triuble broke out around the stadium.
FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS
- THE walk from Pudding Mill Lane to the London Stadium was like being
on the set of Robocop (Google it, kids!). Riot police everywhere. - IF you thought BT Sport was bad, you should have seen home fans
wishing their teams good luck on Hammercam on the big screens before
kick-off. Made their owners’ old soft porn flicks look classy. - JOHN TERRY returned to action after more than a month out with an
ankle injury and wasted a good chance to open the scoring when he
hooked Willian’s corner over the bar at the near post in the third
minute.
- THE Chelsea skipper was beaten in the air as Cheikhou Kouyate put West
Ham 1-0 up in the 11th minute with a thumping header. - N’GOLO KANTE had earlier seen his shot beaten away by Hammers keeper
Darren Randolph. - THE goal lifted the hosts and they almost had a second when Michail
Antonio shot just wide as his team-mate Dimitri Payet appealed for a
penalty on the ground. - THE threat of trouble clearly must have put some West Ham fans off
coming as there were a few empty spaces in the home ends prompting
Chelsea’s travelling support to taunt: “They’re here, they’re there,
they’re every f***ing where, empty seats, empty seats.”

- THE first half saw the following message flash up on the stadium’s big
screens: Stand up if you love the darts. I am reliably informed this
was an advert and not the cue for fans to start throwing sharp objects
at each other. - EDIMILSON FERNANDES made it 2-0 early in the second half with a low
shot that went through Terry’s legs on its way into the net. - A POLICE helicopter hovered over the stadium for most of the night and
yet the Queen did not jump out once like she did at the 2012 opening
ceremony. How disappointing.

WHAT THEY SAID
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said: "The players did everything and deserved to win. We are happy.
"In the last week everything went against us but we are professionals. The fans felt deeply such a negative result and today was a good chance to clear that feeling because a derby knockout and to win gives everyone a better feeling."
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said: "I'm proud of the young players and how they played.
“At that level you need to be more clinical with the last pass but it's difficult against United. We are happy. I want to try to win but now we'll focus on the next competitions."
