Southampton vs Sunderland: Empty stand at the EFL Cup clash shows that maybe fans stayed at home to watch Great British Bake Off final

And in the first 45 minutes at least, it looked like a good decision to stay in and watch the hit BBC baking programme

WITH almost the whole of one stand empty, it appears Southampton fans had other things to do tonight rather than cheer their side on against Sunderland in the EFL Cup.

And if the first 45 minutes were anything to go by, it was a good decision with the play scrappy and neither side having a shot on target.

Maybe it was the Great British Bake Off that tempted people to stay indoors, and there would have been more cheering at Candice Brown's win than in the first half that's for sure.

Things improved in the second period when club-record signing Sofiane Boufal cracked home a superb solo effort after a punt forward.

In their last home game, a 3-1 Premier League triumph against Burnley on Sunday, October 16, the attendance at St Mary's was 29.040.

The attendance for tonight's EFL Cup clash was noted at being 21,460 - but you would guess this has taken into account the regular season-ticket holders, who were nice and warm at home watching Paul Hollywood and co do their judging.
