Tottenham’s youngsters end terrible Premier League 2 run against Manchester United

Shayon Harrison caps off his senior debut week with late equaliser for Spurs U23s

SHAYON HARRISON capped off a dream week by ending Tottenham’s terrible Premier League 2 run just days after making his first-team debut.

The Spurs striker was a late sub in the League Cup defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday and his goal on Friday - that cancelled out Joe Riley's opener - grabbed his U23s side a point after five defeats on the spin.

All their hard work and possession was laid to waste when the visitors took the lead, hugely against the run of play.

Sean Goss picked out the explosive run of Riley and, when he took control of the ball and cut inside, it was only fair that United’s first attack finished with the opener, such was the ruthlessness of the move.

Spurs battled back into the game and got their rewards 11 minutes before the break. Anton Walkes used one sweet volleyed touch to kill the ball at the feed of Cy Goddard and he fired goalwards. The shot was blocked but only into the path of Harrison who spanked it in.

Harrison then had a couple of chances to win the game after the break but he was twice denied by last-ditch United defending and had to make do with one goal and one point in an unforgettable week.

  • Spurs went into the game having lost their last five Premier League 2 games on the spin. They play lovely football but a run like that must kill morale.

  • Reports of Wigan holding a meeting with United’s youth team manager Warren Joyce at midday to make him their boss were a little off, he was at Hotspur Way, Enfield.
  • In the absence of mini-Messi, Marcus Edwards, Spurs had Kyle Walker-Peters as playmaker-in-chief. The youngster with was a cut above all the players on show.
  • Mauricio Pochettino wondered over from first-team duties to watch the youngsters in action – perhaps concerned by their woeful run of recent results and they responded with a draw.
  • Sean Goss is tipped to be the new Michael Carrick but he looked less like a Rolls Royce of a player and more like a car crash as he steamed in to tackle a team-mate in the first half.

  • Spurs’ giant defender Christian Maghoma can give but not receive. When a United player was pulled-up for a heavy tackle the giant centre-back was squealing for his rival to be booked, only to put in a similarly oafish tackle moments later.
  • Spurs' tiny playmaker Cy Goddard might only be around 5ft 5ins but he manages to get his head above the parapet plenty. He takes a decent set-piece and is never afraid to get on the ball.
  • Class acts Danny Rose and Kyle Walker both strolled over to meet young fans and have photos taken.
  • There wasn’t a player, fan or pitch-side agent who didn’t end up with a ladybird in their mouth or hair at some stage – there’s a crazy infestation of the dotted bugs around the magnificent training ground.
  • The United youth team that dazzled with talents like Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison is a distant memory. This side is big, quick and strong but there’s no sign of the new Old Trafford wonder kid.
