As one of the most decorated players of his generation, Giggs undoubtedly fits the bill despite having no first-team managerial experience.

Winkelman previously gave the Welshman’s former team-mate Paul Ince just his second job in senior management and provided the platform for Champions League-winning boss Roberto Di Matteo to start his career.

And Giggs appears keen to follow in their footsteps by landing his first job as a No 1 following three years as assistant at United under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

He had an unsuccessful interview for the Swansea job and lost out to American Bob Bradley after failing to impress the Swans’ hierarchy.

Wigan is another possible destination after they sacked Gary Caldwell.

But Giggs could face some competition for the job in Milton Keynes, with the Dons also set to Paul Mitchell, who enjoyed successful spells at Southampton and Tottenham as head of recruitment.
