Adidas have managed to create the special kits using material recovered from the Maldives coastline, thanks to the association from the ocean protection organisation Parley.

They claim to have designed the first strips completely made by material found from the sea.

Brazilian left-back Marcelo said of the kits: “The Ocean is a place I hold close to my heart after growing up in Rio de Janeiro and I have fond memories of playing on the beach when I was a kid.

“It’s amazing to be part of this project and to know that the club I love is making a difference in helping to keep the oceans clean.”

Former Madrid star Xabi Alonso echoed a similar statement, feeling immense pride when he dons the special strip.

He said: “It’s an honour to go on this journey with adidas and to have the opportunity to wear the adidas x Parley kit on-pitch for the first time.

“With every second breath we take coming from our oceans, it’s really important that we do what we can do safeguard them.

“Wearing a kit that is made from recyclable ocean waste is something I’m very happy about as it’s a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the need to protect and preserve our oceans. I know this is the start of something very special.”

Next year, Adidas – with the help of Parley, plan to convert 11 million plastic bottles found in the ocean into one million pairs of shoes.

Even though both teams sit top of their respective domestic league, going unbeaten in the process so far, there are growing fears both will succumb the top spot of their Champions League group.

Real Madrid were held to a 3-3 draw away to Legia Warsaw with Borussia Dortmund occupying top spot, while Atletico Madrid sit above Munich having beat the German side 1-0 in matchweek two.
