Saints keeping tabs on French midfielder who could be surplus to requirements at Selhurst Park

SOUTHAMPTON are considering a move for Crystal Palace star Yohan Cabaye.

Saints manager Claude Puel is tracking the French midfielder as he looks to strengthen his squad in January.

Puel believes a top eight finish is within the club's grasp and is looking to bring in extra quality to his midfield.

Cabaye, 30, is one of the players on his radar and the pair know each other well after they worked together at Lille at the beginning of his career.

The former Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain star has struggled to hold down a regular place in Alan Pardew's side this season.

suggest Southampton could be ready to test Palace with a bid of around £8million when the transfer window opens in two months.

Pardew's side have slumped down towards the relegation zone in the Premier League on the back of four successive defeats.

He is struggling to settle on his best side and Cabaye's future at Selhurst Park is now in doubt as he finds it hard to produce his best form on a regular basis.

Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Burnley leaves Palace just one point clear of the bottom three and Pardew is under pressure to turn around the alarming slump in form.

The London club paid PSG £10million to sign Cabaye in July 2015 and could be tempted to do business if they could recoup much of that figure.
