Grosskreutz, a former international team-mate of the 32-year-old, is currently playing in the German second tier at Stuttgart.

And he has invited his old national skipper to come and join him.

Grosskreutz told Bild: "He's going through a difficult situation right now.

"But he's coping with it really well. He's invited to join VfB this winter. We'd all be happy."

Grosskreutz’s friendship with the veteran began at the triumphant World Cup in 2014.
