England vs Spain team news: Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney out for Three Lions while Diego Costa misses out for Spain
England skipper Rooney – who was set to make his 120th international appearance – has a knee injury
STRIKERS Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney will miss out for England against Spain tonight, while Diego Costa is sidelined for the Spaniards.
The Three Lions skipper – who was set to make his 120th international appearance – will not feature against Spain due to a knee injury.
Rooney follows in the footsteps of Harry Kane, who left the England camp yesterday to continue his rehabilitation with Tottenham.
Wayne Rooney and Ryan Bertrand were doubts for the clash with Spain, admitted Gareth Southgate, but the Southampton left-back has remained with the squad.
England boss Southgate said before Rooney's withdrawal: "They weren't ready to train today so they must be a doubt, but we'll have to look later.
"I wouldn't start Wayne in this game anyway, so we'll decide which route to go.''
Southgate said of Kane: "The sessions we're going to do aren't what Harry needs at this time.
"It was never really my intention to start him in a game and I think it's important that he gets a different training programme to what we're going to follow over the next couple of days."
For Spain, Chelsea ace Diego Costa has not been able to recover from a groin injury and has been replaced by the Liverpool flop Iago Aspas, who now plys his trade at Celta Vigo.
