The Scot took Wigan to promotion in League One last season and that appeals to Charlton as they look to bounce back.

Charlton will decide on their choice after meeting a couple more candidates but Caldwell has now emerged as a leading option.

St Truiden manager Chris O'Loughlin is the unlikely favourite for the role, according to the bookies.

Former MK Dons boss Karl Robinson has also been linked, as has former Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins.
