Bale has taken to Facebook to respond to fans who've sent him good wishes - as he faces the prospect of missing 21 games.

He wrote: "Thanks for all the messages! Ankle is feeling ok. I'll be doing everything I can to get back on the pitch asap #HalaMadrid"

Wales boss Chris Coleman is understandably concerned with his star man sidelined, but is confident that Bale could be back sooner than expected.

He said: "I'm hoping it's going to be more like three months.

"He's an absolute machine and physically he's an absolute specimen. We'll know a little bit more probably next week or the week after."

Cristiano Ronaldo will continue to carry Real Madrid into the New Year and showed off his leg strength in an Instagram post.

They currently sit top of La Liga, holding off Atleti and Barcelona, and will hope to hold onto that position when they face Sporting Gijon on Saturday afternoon.
