Portuguese Euro 2016 champion Fonte, 32, in particular is a worry, having not signed a new contract despite being in talks since August, while Van Dijk is hot property after a stunning start to the season.

Saints’ scouting team have pinpointed Spurs flop Wimmer, 24, as a long-term replacement.

The Austrian has managed only 12 Prem appearances since joining Spurs in 2015 for £4.3million from Germans Cologne.

Wimmer has found his playing time at Spurs blocked by Belgian duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, England star Eric Dier and even 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach are also keen on the £6m-rated man.
