The West Ham star, who is sung about with such praise by the Hammers faithful, became just another spectator among 65,269 fans at Old Trafford.

After his lazy pass was intercepted by Ander Herrera, Payet, in his statuesque state, watches Henrikh Mkhitaryan race down the wing and square for Anthony Martial to bury.

But the only thing Payet - a £35million transfer target for United - was guilty of was loitering.

United went on to win the game 4-1 thanks to two goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and another by Martial.

It is the Red Devils' second best home win under Jose Mourinho - and the Portuguese was nowhere to be seen!

The result is a stark contrast to the 1-1 draw between the two sides on the weekend in the Premier League.

Man United now face Hull in the semi-final of the EFL Cup while Liverpool take on Southampton.
