Wayne Rooney will be denied chance to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United record on return to Goodison Park

Jose Mourinho lets rip at referee Mike Jones following the decision to show the skipper his fifth booking of the season

JOSE MOURINHO is fuming that Wayne Rooney will miss a return to his former club when Manchester United travel to Everton on Sunday.

The skipper picked up his fifth booking of the season when he was shown a yellow card for dissent following a foul on West Ham's Edmilson Fernandes during their 4-1 EFL Cup win.

But Rooney will have to watch from the sidelines as boss Mourinho remains furious over referee Mike Jones' decision.

The Portuguese said: "He is suspended for a foul when he did not touch the opponent and he cannot play against Everton.

"He cannot go back home for such a big match because of a situation where he didn't touch the opponent."

Despite Rooney receiving his fifth booking of the season, it was a much-needed performance from United as they cruised into the semi-final of the EFL Cup.
