Cherries Burn-ed

Burnley 3 Bournemouth 2: WATCH HIGHLIGHTS – Jeff Hendrick scores first-half contender for goal of the season as Cherries can’t repeat comeback heroics of last weekend

Stephen Ward and George Boyd also net for the Clarets, as Benik Afobe's first goal in 20 games was not enough for Eddie Howe

JEFF HENDRICK netted an early contender for goal of the season to gift Burnley a massive three points against Bournemouth at Turf Moor.

Hendrick got the Clarets off to a flyer having soaked up the Cherries' early pressure, as the £10million summer-signing scored an absolute stunner, taking a beautiful touch and smashing a shot beyond the despairing Artur Boruc from all of 25 yards.

Fellow Irishman Stephen Ward doubled the lead just three minutes later as he bundled home following a scrappy exchange in the penalty area, meaning Eddie Howe's men - much like the Reds clash last week - needed a miracle to come back and win.

However, from then on it was all Bournemouth and on the stroke of half-time, Benik Afobe netted his first goal in 20 games, converting first time from ten yards out to halve the deficit going into the break.

The second-half began in cagey manner, but the points were all but sealed in the 75th minute, when George Boyd finally ended his season-long goal drought to restore the Clarets' two-goal cushion.

Amazingly, Bournemouth's fighting spirit shone through as, following a short corner, Charlie Daniels found the net in stoppage-time to set up a nervy last three minutes.

However, it wasn't quite enough for the Cherries this week, as the home side clung on for all three points.

STATS, FACTS, GOALS & LOLS

    • THIS is a special fixture for Eddie Howe as Burnley are the only other side he has managed. He took charge at Turf Moor for 87 games from 2011-12 before returning to the South Coast.
    • BURNLEY have never lost at Turf Moor to Bournemouth in any competition - winning seven and drawing six of their previous meetings.
    • TOM HEATON was back in goal for Burnley and hoping to start another amazing run. His 142 consecutive league games were ended by a calf problem and he'd missed the last two.

    • THIS has become something of a fortress again for Burnley - 13 of their 14 points going into this had come in front of their own fans.
    • BOURNEMOUTH were looking to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since March.
    • HOWE left Jack Wilshere on the bench so he wouldn't be over-worked during a busy week - he was probably regretting it within 16 minutes as his team were two down.

    • THE Cherries gave Liverpool an early two goal start last week and came back to win - they can't keep doing it though.
    • THE whole of Turf Moor joined in a minutes applause in the eighth minute for Cherries number eight Harry Arter. It was a year to the day since his baby girl Renee was tragically stillborn.
    • STEPHEN WARD'S scrappy goal which put Burnley 2-0 up was his first in the Premier League for 1804 days - the last one came way back in January 2012.

  • BURNLEY fans clearly felt Benik Afobe's goal on the stroke of half-time was well past the minute that was meant to be added on. They might have had a point.
  • SEAN DYCHE was angry too. No doubt he still remembers Arsenal's scrappy late winner here - which came after the referee should have blown.
  • GEORGE BOYD'S goal means Burnley have scored 14 at home this season - that's as many as they managed at Turf Moor in the whole of their last top flight campaign in 2014-15.

WHAT THEY SAID

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "I am very pleased. We are still learning as a side and we can definitely play better but the mentality was brilliant from my players.

"Bournemouth are a great side - Eddie Howe is doing a fantastic job and we knew they would come here feeling confident with their shoulders back after a strong performance against Liverpool but we had a bright start and threatened their back line which I think we did brilliantly."
