BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016: Sports stars do the Icelandic thunderclap…even though Iceland knocked England out of the Euros in embarrassing defeat

England were humiliated by Iceland in the last 16 of the Euros and now SPOTY does the Thunderclap to cap an embarrassing year for the national team

BRITISH sports stars got more than involved in the Icelandic Thunderclap at the Sports Personality of the Year award...even though Iceland dumped England out of the Euros in most embarrassing result in their history. 

The Iceland national team made the viking war chant world famous after their surprise run in the Euros, with the supporters using the thunderclap to cheer on their team and intimidate the opposition.

The celebration caught on for other victorious teams but for England they will have bitter memories of the thunderclap and to top it off they have had to witness British sports stars join in.

The claps and chants become increasingly quicker before the shout of 'huh' comes in make the chant all the more chilling.

England boss Gareth Southgate was not in charge of England at the time of the shocking defeat but he would have been surprised that the chant was allowed to happen.

Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri seemed to be really getting involved in the thunderclap, but he had every reason to be enjoying himself as his side were about to be recognised for their wonderful achievement of winning the Premier League.

The thunderclap was started off by two Iceland fans in shirts with a drum to get the whole crowd going with the celebration.

All in all it was a bit tongue in cheek but it was a surprising inclusion in to the show all things considered with how bad a year it has been for England.

However Southagate will be hoping that come SPOTY 18 he can be leading his team on the stage for the team award after taking his team to World Cup glory in Russia, fingers crossed there wont be another thunderclap moment.
