MANCHESTER UNITED want Jose Mourinho to buck his club-swapping habit and stay at Old Trafford for a decade of dominance – despite their terrible start to the season.

Inside his first four months as Luis van Gaal’s replacement, Mourinho served two FA touchline bans and was fined for his behaviour during dire run that left United looking devoid of top-four chances, let alone title contention.

But they have turned it around in December - with a five-game winning run and star performances from Mourinho’s summer signings Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - and claims the combative boss will be offered a huge extension on his initial three-year deal.

The Portuguese boss has already worked at Benfica, Uniao de Leiria, Porto, Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United at the age of 53 but has never enjoyed a full third season at any of his clubs.

The Special One enjoyed two-and-a-half stellar seasons at Porto before the lure of Chelsea in 2002 became too much.

But, after two consecutive Premier League titles, the wheels come off during the 2006-07 campaign – despite two domestic cups – and he was axed in September 2007.

Two Scudettos in 2009 and 2010 at Inter Milan put the former football translator on top of the world again and he got the biggest managerial job in football at Real Madrid in May 2010.

In his debut season he toppled Barcelona with a La Liga win but he described his follow-up campaign the "the worst of my career" and was sacked.

His heroic June 2013 return to Chelsea lasted exactly two-and-a-half seasons with the axe falling in December 2015 when the players he had cruised to the title with just seven months before appeared to turn against him and down tools.

United took a chance taking on what appeared to be a damaged Mourinho and he has certainly taken some settling in time. The title looks out of reach already but top-four hopes are hugely improved by three Premier League wins on the bounce and dips in form from Arsenal and Man City.

Despite still living in a hotel where fans bother him constantly, and his family living in London, Mourinho seems happy at Old Trafford and now looks set to become Sir Alex Ferguson’s long-term replacement.
