Everton are keen to sign the ex-Strasbourg trainee, but Jose Mourinho wants to recuperate the full £24m they paid Saints for him in 2015.

Everton would make him one of their most highest-paid players ever, as he is currently on £115,000-a-week at United.

An Old Trafford source said: “Morgan and his team have been talking to the club over the past few weeks and over last weekend.

“The club want all the money back they paid Southampton for him. It just hasn't really worked out for him here.

“He is still owed a lot of money in wages and the talks are about how that is going to be broken up and paid between different clubs if he moves.”

Schneiderlin has made just 32 appearances and scored one goal for United over the past 18-months, mostly as a substitute.

He spent seven years with Southampton and helped them to Premier League promotion after joining them in 2008.
