Lindeelof, 22, can play at right back or in central defence.
He started all three of Sweden's Euro 2016 group matches and has 11 caps.
The last player to hold the Old Trafford No2 shirt was Brazilian full-back Rafael Da Silva, who left for Lyon in August 2015.
Lindelof's arrival would take Jose Mourinho's spending in his first season as United boss past the £180million mark.
But United are still only sixth in the Premier League, four points behind Arsenal in fourth and 13 adrift of leaders Chelsea.
