Vermaelen, 31, recovered sufficiently to make complete a rare 90 minutes in the league clash with Chievo last month.
But he pulled up in training on Monday with a fresh muscular blow.
Tests on Tuesday confirmed severe swelling on the star’s left calf – which the club will monitor ‘day-to-day’.
