Former England striker shared a picture of the two standing next to each other at Cristiano Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or handover at the Bernabeu today

MICHAEL OWEN has made a cruel jibe at football legend Ronaldo's weight - and was promptly slammed by Twitter users.

The former England striker, known for his social media gaffes, posted a picture of the pair standing next to each other, alongside Luis Figo.

His caption read: "I thought I was putting the pounds on until I saw my old mate Ronnie!"

Owen, Figo and ex-Brazil striker Ronaldo, so prolific in his time, were at the Bernabeu today as former Ballon d'Or winners themselves - and Real Madrid players - to honour Los Blancos star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal’s captain was presented the award by France Football last month, capping a golden year in which he became a European champions with club and country, winning the Champions League and the European Champions.

Ronaldo and Owen were there to congratulate Ronaldo - prompting the former Liverpool and Newcastle striker's rude remark.
