Manchester United have most visited football website in the world with Arsenal and Liverpool not far behind

United have 8.5million monthly users reflecting their global fanbase... but Premier League leads the way as likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona fall behind

MANCHESTER UNITED have the most visited website of any football club in the world - as Premier League sides have more traffic than anyone.

Last season, United had almost 8.5million monthly visitors during, with Arsenal just behind in second, and Liverpool in third with just under 8million.

And according to UEFA's club licensing benchmarking report, the three English sides were all ahead of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, who had highest monthly visits of a little over 7m and a little over 6m respectively.

Those five clubs enjoy a huge web lead over every other side in world football, with Turkish side Fenerbahce surprisingly in sixth.

Arsenal come in second - but struggle to engage the readers

Chelsea are the fourth Premier League team in the top seven, with over 3m visitors per month - as Bundesliga pair Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich complete the top 10, behind Dynamo Kiev.

While Europe's biggest clubs dominate the table, Egypt's Al Ahly are in 11th, ahead of French side PSG who have almost 3m monthly views.

Brazilians Sao Paulo, in 16th, are the other non-European side in the top 20.

Premier League dominance continues outside the top 10, with Tottenham, Manchester City and champions Leicester all in the top 20, making it seven English sides in total.

Clubs that have traditionally larger fanbases able to take advantage of more hits, with football fans particularly active online.

After England, Germany, France, Spain and Turkey are the next most successful countries in terms of traffic, but none of them have more than two teams in the list.

But in terms of how long readers engage with stories, only Chelsea and Liverpool out of the English clubs could keep fans interested for more than three minutes - with Arsenal retaining fans for less than two minutes.
