'They could all be sold'

Everton 4 Manchester City 0: Jamie Carragher lays into Man City defence after dreadful defeat at Goodison Park

JAMIE CARRAGHER has laid into Man City's defence after a dreadful 4-0 defeat at Everton.

Gael Clichy in particular was singled out for criticism after jogging back as Kevin Mirallas scored the Toffees' second.

The former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports: "It's the whole  back four. This is not just today, it's the whole season at Man City.

"They lose the second ball. Look at Clichy, jogging, jogging. If he sprints back he makes a challenge [on Mirallas]."

Graeme Souness agreed, saying: "He's [Clichy] too concerned with Seamus Coleman wide of him but when he sees John Stones go to ground like that, he's got to sprint in. He's got to make it narrow."

But Carragher claimed City have had defensive problems for years and Pep Guardiola would be well within his rights to put the entire back line up for sale.

He said: "They've been doing this for years, all those defenders. Every defender at Man City could be sold."

The desire of Man City's ageing midfield was also called into question by Graeme Souness.

He said: "City were a tippy-tappy outfit from start to finish. There's something missing.

"You look at the centre of midfield, Zabaleta 32, Yaya Toure close to 34-years-old.

"That's your engine room, you've got to have piles and piles of enthusiasm and energy.

"Yeah they had lots of ball, tippy-tappy, they didn't know what to do with it.

"When Davies gets it, Yaya's got to think 'danger'. Second touch, look he's ballwatching.

"That's not a proper midfield player. It's alright being silky on the ball and being creative but if you're being asked to play in a central role in midfield, you've got to sense danger."

City restricted their opponents to just four shots on target, but unfortunately for Pep Guardiola, Claudio Bravo let every single one of them in.

The Chilean goalkeeper has now conceded from 14 of the last 22 shots on target he has faced.
