IT WAS double delight for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil on Saturday as was crowned German 2016 Player of the Year after helping the Gunners thump Swansea.

The 28-year-old has recently been absent through illness, but returned to the side for the 4-0 victory in south Wales.

Although he failed to find the target himself, he shone as Arsene Wenger’s men romped their way to three points while he did manage to provide an assist for Olivier Giroud.

And things got even better for the former Real Madrid winger later in the night.

For the fifth time in his career, Ozil was announced as the winner of the award back in his homeland.

The DFB confirmed that he had won with 54.5% of the votes, miles ahead of second-placed Toni Kroos who had 33.9%.

In good news for Arsenal, the contract dispute between Ozil and the club has not affected his thoughts on London, with the ace confirming how happy he is in England.

He said: "I’ve simply arrived in the Premier League since last season. I’ve remained injury-free for the most part and I feel very comfortable in London now as well."

After winning the World Cup in 2014, Ozil and his international team-mates missed out on European Championship glory in France last summer.

They were eliminated by the host nation in the semi-final, but they did enjoy a memorable victory over Italy that Ozil scored in.

Ozil reflected: "My highlight was the game against Italy at the EUROs – I definitely enjoy thinking back on my goal.

"But we didn’t reach our target, which was to win the European Championships. We wanted to win our semi-final against France, but didn’t accomplish it.

"On the other hand, we were able to phase-in a transition with many young players, which is important in regard to the World Cup where we will try to defend our title.”
