Steven Gerrard: Liverpool legend returns to Merseyside club as an academy coach following retirement

LIVERPOOL have confirmed that Steven Gerrard has returned to the club as an academy coach.
The Kop idol spent 17 years with the Reds before departing for MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015.
But Gerrard has now returned to Anfield after ending his American adventure in December and will play a huge role in developing youngsters for the future.
The 36-year-old was previously linked with a position in the FA set-up following the appointment of Gareth Southgate as the permanent England boss.
MK Dons also made an audacious move to make Gerrard their next manager following his retirement from professional football.
But the former Three Lions captain has instead opted to head back to familiar territory in what is sure to prove a huge boost for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
, Gerrard said: “It feels like completing the circle; returning to the place where professionally it all began. However, this isn’t a decision based on emotion – it’s about what I can offer and contribute to Liverpool.

“I don’t think I need to explain to people what this football club means to me, but when I knew coming back was a serious option I wanted to make sure it was a substantive role and a role in which I could really help the organisation.”
Academy director Alex Inglethorpe added: “For him to have been so enthusiastic about being part of what we are looking to do is simply great news for everyone connected to the club.”
