The Frenchman is now public enemy No 1 among supporters but a club source said: “Despite what is going on between Payet and the club, players should not be at risk in their own homes.”
Fans have made up an anti-Payet song and sprayed walls at the club’s London Stadium to make their feelings known.
Payet, 29, wants to leave West Ham as his old club Marseille try to get him on the cheap.
The Frenchman joined from Marseille in the summer of 2015 and quickly established himself as a fan favourite.
His stunning goals and sensational performances endeared him to the fans, and he earned a nomination for the PFA Player' Player of the Year award.
However, his form has been up-and-down this season.
And manager Slaven Bilic dropped the bombshell that Payet is unhappy in East London and determined to return home — and is refusing to play for the club.
Marseille chiefs have had several bids rejected and it remains to be seen whether the midfielder will still be a Hammer come the end of January.
